My aunt got a plant 60 years ago from Fritiof Nilsson "The Pirate's" sister Eva Nilsson. "The Pirate" was a well known swedish writer from the south of Sweden and the plant is named after him. I got to become 50 years before I was trusted with a plant! I got one plant that I divided in four parts. Today it has multiplied and takes up two flowerboxes, several Höganäs pots, some big and some smaller pots. Besides this I have given many plants to friends. In the winter of 2006/07 I had 18 pots and plants in a box.
If you have any questions- call Ylva, that after some mistakes now knows how the flower should be treated.
PS. I will come and check up on it's taken well care of. I have promised that to my strict aunt.
This plant is propagated in the following way:
1. Let the plant flower. Cut of the flowers and put them in water until they get roots, plant them. Think about that the flowers aren't that likely to get roots in the winter.
2. Part a plant with a knife. Plant the parts in new pots. You get the best result if this is done already in the autumn. Then the plants will grow during the winter.
3. The plant likes to get the flowers cut off during the winter. The more you cut, the more it will grow. You can put the flowers in a vase if you want.
4. When it gets cold outside, take all your plants inside on the spot. They have to be kept indoors during the winter and can't stand any white frost so keep an eye on them!
The plant grows constantly and gets bigger and bigger. It gets as big as the pot lets it. If it is well taken care of you can fill many pots or flowerboxes in a couple of years. You can have it inside or outside, but it likes it better outside. If it is in a sunny spot it gets red leaves, in the shadow the leaves turn green. The plant turns out most beautiful in half-shade, preferably in the shadow of a tree.
Over the years I have given away plants to many of my friends, 34 the last time I counted. Soon we are enough people to found a Pirate Company. Ha, ha, ha!
